10 Top Tips for keeping your pooch cool over the summer


1. Feeding early morning and late evening - Dogs (and humans) digestive process can generate heat causing dinner time a stressful time.

Keeping hydrated – We all have different needs when battling the heat and so do our furry companions. Darker coats absorb more heat than dogs with lighter coats. Requirements also depend on weight and size – overweight dogs will generate more heat and tend to dehydrate quicker. Always make sure you provide extra bowls with lots of fresh cold water, ice cubes are a great way to encourage your dog to drink more on hot days. Does your dog need to visit the groomers?

6. Outdoor shade – If your dog likes spending time in the garden then shade should always be available and provided. Whether its under a tree or umbrella, there should always be a place for your dog to escape from direct sunlight. Make sure they have access to indoor areas at all times.

7. Indoor shade – Open all windows, close blinds and curtains as this stops the sun from directly beaming into the room. Fans are a dog’s best friend, having it rest on something that’s the same level as your pooch is always an advantage for them.

8. Skin protection – From a furry coat to slim trim, dogs can still be exposed and damaged by UV rays. Applying doggy sun lotion to their fur and skin will help to prevent any burning or discomfort.

9. Frozen treats – Freezing and blending healthy fruit and veg to make pupsicles are a fun, tasty and refreshing treat for your dog. Even the fussiest of pooches can have fun and stay cool – try putting their kong or preferred chew toy in the freezer with yummy filling for encouragement.

10. Useful accessories – Doggy boots are an excellent solution for walks on the boiling hot concrete. Remember your pups paws can be as sensitive as the soles of your feet, keep them pads pawfect. Refrigerated cooling coats are comfortable and light helping reduce anxiety and stress. Cool pads are amazing and should definitely be an essential in summer for dogs that are prone to over heating, especially on those dreadful car journeys.
